On March 17, 2011, 8-year old Owen Brezitski was killed by a distracted driver while crossing the street with his family at a pedestrian crosswalk in front of Bishop McDevitt High School following his sisters' band concert that evening. The teenage driver, traveling about ten miles over the posted speed limit, was distracted by music on their cell phone and a conversation they were having with a passenger when they failed to notice the pedestrian-filled crosswalk and struck Owen.
Since then, Owen's parents, Mark and Karen Brezitski have made it a mission to raise awareness on the importance of not driving distracted. Through their efforts not only to raise awareness but make a difference in the community, Owen's Foundation have purchased and installed solar LED crosswalk signs at Bishop McDevitt High School, purchased new equipment for Owen's baseball team and have helped to improve the Silence of Mary home in Harrisburg. They have also created the Owen Brezitski Memorial Scholarship Fund to help Bishop McDevitt students who wish to continue their education.
In 2015 alone, 3,477 people were killed, and 391,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers. (NHTSA)
Men's Basketball will do all they can do help highlight and extend the Brezitski family's message and to honor Owen on Saturday afternoon by wearing special orange warm-ups and orange socks.
Owen's Foundartion is a fund of "The Foundation for Enhancing Communities (TFEC). TFEC is an incorporated 501(c)(3) status, nonprofit organization located in Harrisburg, Pa.
